Starting Out- What are the do's and don'ts

I am thinking about starting a community. I have an idea for the topic. I'll use it as a learning experience.

What should be done and what should one not do when starting out for the first time?

Have a solid plan in place before you start.

• Look at other forums in your niche to get an idea for the forum layout.
  
• Don't copy it exactly. Use it for a guide.
• Decide on which software you are going to use.
  
• Choose the domain name and set up hosting for the community.
• Install the necessary software to run the community on the server. PHP, mySQL and the like.
• Install the forum software and set up the options.
• Create the forum hierarchy.
• Style the site to your liking.
• Add content.

Once open there are other things you'll need to do. Lets get this done first then you can move on to the next phase which is the most challenging.

Go in with an open mind. Rome wasn't built in a day and either will your new community. Have patience and in the end it will pay off.
